Last night I had a vision of myself running away from love and becoming very, very thin. So thin I couldn't tell if I had bones or not! And then I told myself in my vision, "Damn! Maybe my love is not as fat as I thought!"
That may sound funny! But it was a big realization for me! We all have the power to love deeply, to give and receive love, to reciprocate with love. LOVE in many forms, ages and ways… LOVE is everywhere, but how often our love pounds weigh less than we thought?
"Love is patient, love is kind. It is not jealous, [love] is not pompous, it is not inflated, it is not rude, it does not seek its own interests, it is not quick-tempered, it does not brood over injury, it does not rejoice over wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails…" - Corinthians
Have you heard that definition of LOVE before? Pretty awesome, right? I call that the-real-FAT-and-HEALTHY LOVE! (this may be on of those rare cases where those two words go well together!) So, is your love that fat & healthy?
All relationships in life (and I mean ALL!) serve us as a vehicle to practice THAT kind of LOVE! Love for a child, love for a friend, love for a mentor or a parent, love for a special he/she in your life, love for an "inferior" being like a dog or a cow, love for nature, love for a co-worker, love for the boss, love for the family, love for God, love, love, love!
Love heals and love is the language of the heart yet the way our society has been designed is by putting our LOVE in a fasting marathon! Making our love angry, weak and skinny.
The question you may be asking is: "How can we make our love fatter?"...
To find the answer to this question I've decided to look at the other side of the coin! What is the opposite of LOVE? Hate, right? And a very famous celebrity and wise being once defined it like this:
"Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering." -Yoda (Go Yoda! Right on point, Sir!)
The question now is: What leads us to fear in our daily life?
The Bhagavad Gita (a spiritual scripture) explains: in daily life it's easy to become attached to the process of satisfying the senses. That strong attachment creates a strong desire for gratification; that strong attachment to gratification attaches us to material life, and that attachment to material life then causes fear of losing our material comfort and existence. And then fear takes us to the chain of actions described by Yoda!!!
(PAUSE, ok, deep breath in! And release, as we continue towards the brighter side :)
So where does it all begin? Attachment to gratification! Does that mean that we must cultivate DETACHMENT to all material life? Mmmm...I don't know about you, but for me that sounds really freaking hard! I've learned easier techniques in my path and I want to share them with you.
Technique #1: Educate YourSelf!
Just like we study to be a professional in the material world, we MUST also educate ourselves to become professionals in the spiritual world! We gotta stop seeing the world as one-dimensional. There is a lot happening beyond this material existence, and without knowledge, we will get lost trying to satisfy our material senses. If we can't understand what's going on beyond this physicality, we won't understand the great value of our actions, spiritually speaking. And the next practices I'm about to share with you won't even make sense.
So, stop wasting your time and start reading! I recommend starting with a "spiritual book" you've been planning to read for a really long time, but if you have no idea where to start, I suggest one of my faves: "The Bhagavad Gita." And if you like novels maybe you would enjoy "The Mahabharat" or "The Ramayana" (both are Indian pastimes with many highly spiritual teachings).
Technique #2: Use the power of mantra!
Mantra is a word composed of 2 words: Man (which originates from the sanskrit word "manas" that means "mind") and Tra (which means "to liberate"). So yes! Mantras liberates the mind! And mind in this case doesn't mean the intelligence or the brain but I mean that place where our real thoughts, feelings and desires originate and are stored! Again, mantras, could be your best weapon to liberate yourself from undesirable attachments.
They are maaaaaany mantras you could use like "I am love" or "I am detached". That's great and everything, but there is this other language called sanskrit that is like the secret language of nature, is spoken by nature and discovered by rishis (wise men like Yoda).
Mantras in this language are much more powerful and when you understand their meaning, it's not even that hard to sing them. For example, let's use my favorite one. They call it the "Maha Mantra" (the Greatest Mantra), and it's soul purpose is to purify the heart and empower your loving qualities. This mantra is composed of 3 words Hare (which is another name for Radha, who is the divine mother and purest loving being you will ever meet, and can deliver you to pure love), Krishna (means the "all attractive one"; I call him the blue king, and you know how we girls dreamed of the perfect blue prince when we were young. Well, he's kind of like that but better! His name cleanses the heart from all material contamination and bestows you love). And finally Rama (in this case referring to Balarama, Krishna's brother, and he is in charge of delivering the greatest pleasure of all, spiritual bliss in the heart!). And the mantra goes like this: Hare Krishna Hare Krishna / Krishna Krishna Hare Hare / Hare Rama Hare Rama / Rama Rama Hare Hare. Try it daily and you'll see why I love it so much. Remember: it's a mantra you need to repeat a lot!
Here is an audio gift from me to you! (this was recorded by my band and I last year) Enjoy!
Technique #3: Become spiritually-attached!
Ha! You weren't expecting that! So as there is material attachment that lands in anger and hate. There also is spiritual attachment that delivers us to LOVE and it's many expressions!
How can you become spiritually attached? By seeing everything in your life as a spiritual action not a material one! So when one acts, one automatically serves! For example, when you breathe, you are of service to nature! and when you cook you serve the body (so please, cook to purify the body not contaminate it!)
Everything you do, do it with LOVE, and your actions will automatically fall into the loving service category! So stop feeding your lower self with arrogance and start serving from that place where all our qualities of LOVE originate from.
Come on! You can do this! Invite the big, fat & healthy love into your life! Now, how are you gonna do that? Share your thoughts on the comments below!
