To Do When Visiting Amsterdam

Here you will find my tips, suggestions, and personal anecdotes from my visit to Amsterdam. Make sure to check out my other post "Backing Europe in 10 Days" for more travel information.

If you're planning a trip to Amsterdam or were ever just interested in visiting this city, you've come to the right place! Let me walk you through the vibrant and eclectic city of Amsterdam offering my tips and suggestions. Amsterdam is definitely one of the places you can take it slow and chill so if that is more your vibe, I definitely recommend staying here for more than a day.

We spent three unforgettable days in Amsterdam at the closing of our trip. We knew we'd be exhausted from our travels, so we opted for a comfortable Airbnb right in the heart of the city. It was an ideal choice, and the cloudy weather only added to the city's cool, moody atmosphere. With everyone dressed in dark clothes, leather jackets, and stylish boots, we did our best to fit in with the local aesthetic and embrace the culture.

1. Chill At The Cafes

Amsterdam is known for its unique coffee shops, where you can savor a special blend of caffeine and culture. These cafes serve not only your usual espresso and coffee but also take a unique approach by offering marijuana alongside your drink.

As someone coming from the states, this was an entirely new experience. I have 2 must-visit spots in mind. One of them being the 420 Cafe where you can purchase your marijuana and pair it with an espresso joined by a cute sugar cube. One of my other favorite spots being Lost in Amsterdam Lounge, a cozy nook that didn't sell marijuana but allowed you to bring your own. Their incredibly comfortable booths and delectable milkshakes made it a personal favorite, especially after days of exploration. They also had a massive menu with a lot of interesting alcoholic beverages. These places offer a relaxed ambiance and a variety of coffee and drinks, making them perfect for chilling.

2. Visit Amsterdam Smart Shops

If you're feeling a bit more adventurous, check out the smart shops that sell truffles. These are legal, mind-bending alternatives to the well-known magic mushrooms. You'll find knowledgeable staff who can guide you through the experience, ensuring a safe and memorable journey.

The one we visited, The Magic Mushroom Gallery, did a fantastic job informing us about the different truffles. If you plan on trying them, consider taking a seat in a park or visiting the picturesque canals.

3. Navigating Amsterdam's Red Light District

The Red Light District is one of Amsterdam's most famous attractions. When you explore this area, be sure to follow some basic dos and don'ts. Do respect the women working in the windows and their privacy. Don't take photos of them, as it's considered disrespectful. Instead, focus on the vibrant atmosphere, architecture, and unique shops in the area.

Of course, we couldn't miss a visit to the famous Red Light District. What struck us most was how well it was hidden during the day. The same streets we strolled in the daylight transformed into a completely different world after 7:30 PM. At night, it's easy to find, thanks to the red lights on the sidewalks and the glowing red lights surrounding the windows with women. It's a must-see, even if you don't attend a sex show or a peep show – it's a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

4. Cheese and Wine Canal Tour

For a delightful change of pace, hop on a Wine & Cheese Canal Tour through Viator. It's a delicious way to explore the city's picturesque canals. Sample an array of Dutch cheeses, sip on fine wine, and take in the beautiful surroundings. It's an experience you won't want to miss.

On our final day, we embarked on a wine and cheese canal tour, and our guide was an entertaining and hilarious. We were fortunate to have a guide who not only shared historical tidbits about the city but also spilled some well-kept secrets. We chatted with him for a while after the tour, and he recommended some hidden gems in Amsterdam:

  • Use the Bash App to find non-touristy nightlife events.

  • Satisfy your taste buds at the Food Hallen.

  • Experience the unique atmosphere at the Skate Cafe.

  • Enjoy some laughs at the Alto Comedy Club.

5. Anne Frank House

To get a little history in, I would suggest a visit to the Anne Frank House. It is a must for anyone interested in history. Be prepared for a moving and educational experience.

It's a captivating experience to see her diaries up close, something we've all heard about and read in books, but it is incredibly powerful to see up close. The audio tour provides excellent insights. Just remember to book your tickets early, as they tend to sell out fast. Book your tickets here.

6. Savoring Dutch Delicacies

Now of course I wouldn't forget about the foodies who want to know what is good to eat here. Amsterdam is a food lover's paradise, and you can't leave without trying some local dishes. Don't miss out on classics like Dutch pancakes (poffertjes), bitterballen, or stroopwafels. These sweet and savory treats are essential for a true Amsterdam experience.Another street for you will find are one of Amsterdam's signature dishes- mouthwatering fries, often served with a variety of delectable sauces.

My personal favorite thing to eat was all of their wonderful sweets and cheese! A place you can go to get some souvenirs to bring home your Stroopwafels and Cheeses: Henri Willig Cheese Shop. This place is wonderful, they let you go around and sample each cheese and have many different stroopwafel flavors.

As you explore Amsterdam, remember to embrace the local culture, try new foods, and respect the city's unique traditions. Whether you're sipping coffee in a cozy cafe, navigating the Red Light District, or indulging in Dutch delicacies, Amsterdam offers a little something for everyone.
